How To Make A Queen Duvet Cover

A queen duvet cover will protect your duvet from dust and dirt. While they are not expensive, those that are handy may want to make their own. It is not hard to do at all and you can have your own personal duvet cover in a few simple steps.

You will only need a few things to start off with: buttons, measuring tape, snap tapes, bed sheets, pins, shears, fabric marking pens, your fabric, ironing board, iron, sewing machine, thread, and yard stick.

First you want to measure the width and length of your duvet with the tape measure and write down the measurements. Then choose a nice washable fabric. You should look for something that’s light and feels good against your skin if you will use the duvet in place of a top sheet.

Choose two equal lengths of fabric for the front of the queen duvet cover. Each part should be equal to the length of the measurements you’ve already taken, then add five inches. Choose two equal lengths of fabric for the back cover, too. They should be equal to the length measurement, then add three inches.

You want to look for fabrics that are at least 54 inches wide to cover a duvet that is 104 inches wide. If your duvet is wider than that, then get one extra panel of fabric for each side. Pay attention to fabrics that have patterns or prints. You may need to make adjustments so that they match up. Be sure to pre-wash the fabric and iron it if you need to.

Now you fold one front panel in half lengthwise putting the wrong sides together. Make a sharp crease at the fold with an iron then unfold the fabric. Repeat this with one of the back panels. Use your fabric pen and yardstick to make a line down the length of the crease on the panels, then cut along each line.

You now have six panels, three for the front cover and three for the back. Pin a narrow front panel to one side of an uncut front panel and pin it so the right sides of the fabric are together and the edges line up evenly.

Along the pinned edges sew a half-inch seam and press it open. Pin the rest of the narrow front panel to the other side of the uncut front panel and sew another half-inch seam there. Press the seam open.

Repeat these steps for the back panels of your queen duvet cover. If your duvet is wider and you got additional fabric panels, cut these panels as you did the others. Add these panels in as usual. Take the assembled front and back parts of the queen duvet cover and measure them. Be sure that the width of each pieces is two inches longer than the width of the duvet. Trim if necessary.

Put the front and back panels of the cover on top of one another with the right sides together. Be sure all the top and side edges line up evenly and pin them in place. The edges on bottom will be uneven, do not worry about that and do not pin them.  Sew a half-inch seam around all the pinned edges and press the seams open.

Turn the bottom edges under about one half inch and sew them into place. Pin or press the edges if necessary before sewing them. Now turn the queen duvet cover right side out and attach snap closures to the opening. The snaps should be about four to five inches apart and about one inch from the opening. Fix the ball snaps to the wrong side of the longer flap and the socket snaps to the right side of the shorter flap so that you can easily close the cover.

This should give you a lovely, queen duvet cover that has your own personal touch.
